It - Extended Analysis
Interstellar is a 2014 science fiction film written, directed and produced by Christopher Nolan. The main cast stars Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Set in dystopian future where humanity is struggling to survive, the film follows a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for mankind.’’ The film was distributed by paramount and warner bros pictures. Box office = $ 773.8 million
The scene begins with the a textual overlay of the name of the film on the screen infront of what seems to be a book rack, a rocket and dust falling down all three being major hints of the film. A voice narrating the start begins taking us to the next scene of an old lady, Murphy, narrating her past along with a shot of a cornfield. A slight blue filter is apparent, hinting towards the unpleasant climate.
Along with the narration slight sound of the wind blowing can be heard as were taken to the next scene.
A sound of engines can be heard as the next scene begins with what seems to be a jet in the clouds as the camera cuts to a side view of one of the characters, Joseph Cooper, who seems to be panicking as the jet stops as has been told. The camera then cuts to cooper waking up from a nightmare- the lighting here is dark with a slight glow of blue. Another character comes into view, Murph, a conversation between both the characters begin as the camera cuts to and from Cooper to Murph (shoulder level shot).
The camera cuts to a side view of Cooper's face as he looks out the window. The lighting is warm here the blue light signifying sunrise coming from the window and a slight yellow-ish light. A pov shot of the view can be seen what seems to be a alndscape of maize crops.
The theme song slowly plays as the narration starts again.
The camera cuts to someone cleaning the dust off their front door a storm coming in can also be seen. The camera cuts to and from the narrators to scenes of their memories. The camera then sets into the kitchen where a few characters are having breakfast talking all the while cooper cuts into the camera as. It stars following him and showing a wide shot to the viewers. The lighting here is warm as well showing the natural everyday lifestyle.
The next scene begins with a (high/low angle shot) of Murph and Cooper as they converse.
The camera pans over tom to Cooper walking out the door as the next scene begins. The only sound here as well is that of the conversation taking place and the wind blowing. In the background smoke blows to which one of the character points out saying ‘’ that a dust storm?’’ But it turns out to be a field on fire. A wide (ground level shot) shows the full view of the background.
The next scene begins with an inside shot of the car along with the characters. The conversation going on is the only sound until the tire punctures as it drags along the road and the car comes to a halt. A static shot from afar shows as the characters tend to the problem.
While Tom changes the tire a shot of Cooper and Murph show as they both have a conversation (medium shot). A roaring sound is heard as the camera follows a drone fly over. The theme song of the film begins to play as the scene comes to an end.
